Well, according to a site I looked at whilst looking up how to grow potato bonsai, if it starts to get smelly, it's a sign the potato is going evil and should be thrown out. Although if it'll continue to survive even if the tuber itself rots, then I guess the deciding factor will be whether or not the other members of the house decide it's gotten out of hand.
