ruWell, I've now finished watching the premire of Eureka. I must say, I liked it. I dunno that I'm necessarily fully hooked yet, but I'm definitely intrigued enough to keep watching it, at least for a little while. In any case, though this may be the first time in a very long time that I've got a show that I'm watching that has an actual storyline, and that I'm watching it as it first airs, instead of mixed up reruns.
I have some initial good and bad impressions, which I'll slip behind a cut for the benefit of those in other time zones who may have not seen it yet.
Good Things
--The opening quote. It just made me grin. Something by Einstein along the lines of "A little bit of knowledge is dangerous. So is a lot of knowledge."
--The music. I was rather fond of the music, which had quaint little town charm with an air sci-fi-eyness. Sorry, my ability to describe things isn't at peak condition at the moment. Either way, though, the music made me giggle at how well it reflected the town.
--The screenwriting. It was witty and fun, and really gave me a good feel for the town and the characters within it. It's a town where explosions are a normal occurrence, and I definitely got that impression.
--Joe. <3 <3 <3 Joe the trigger-happy-apricot-scrub-using deputy. She's going to be fun to watch.
--The dog. I'm very interested in the dog, considering how the previous sheriff talked to him and how Taggert seems to have a personal vendetta against it. There's obviously something going on with the dog. Maybe it's got Einstein's brain, or something.
--Pyramidal bubbles. <3 <3 <3
--Grease monkey looking at a DNA pinup. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
Bad Things
--Mumbling. Things got better as the story picked up, but for about the first half hour or so, I was sitting there trying to hear what people were saying and shouting in my head for people to AN-UN-CI-ATE. I'm glad things cleared up eventually, so I could actually hear what was going on. Otherwise, I think I would've been turned off.
--Too much too fast. For a first episode, I think too much was thrown at me. For instance, the counselor-espionage-spy lady. I think I would've preferred learning about the espionage part a couple episodes later (also, as an aside, this may just be the fact that I watch too much CSI, but I was going "THEY SHOULD DUST THAT MEDICINE BOTTLE FOR PRINTS, SHE'S GOT HER HANDS ALL OVER IT", after she set up that woman's suicide). For a first episode, I would rather stick to establishing the setting and the main characters, instead of setting up for the subplot. There were some instances of overdevelopment, too. Joe's character was developed too much too fast, for example. While I liked the fact that she uses things like apricot scrub, I think I would've preferred to learn that a little later, and instead stick to enjoying just the trigger-happy part for a few episodes.
Overall
It's a show with a lot of potential, with more good things than bad. I'm definitely going to watch it a little longer, at least, although right now, I expect I'm going to be sticking with it. Further episodes will tell.
