The Wild Life and Times of a Botanical Geek

We have a tunnel on the uni (technically two, but that's beside the point) that runs under the railroad tracks that bisect the main campus. Its main purpose is to keep students from getting regularly run over by Amtrak. It has a greater significance to the student body, however, as a university Canvas for Whatever. Dubbed the Free Expression Tunnel, it's a place where students can paint on the walls without fear of getting slapped with a vandalism charge. It's regularly used to announce various things, to act as a canvas for graffiti artists, and a place to write swear words (once upon a time, when I went to the uni open house as a wee high schooler, aneles drew a tiny cheese on the wall as we walked through it <3).

On occasion, though, it becomes a place for people to paint some win. See, lighthawk and I sometimes get together for lunch, and we take the tunnel to get to the dining hall. Today, as we passed through it, I noticed with utter glee that somebody had decided to paint a Dalek in the Free Expression Tunnel. WIN. Although I think it's a little bit sad of me that I not only noticed what type of Dalek it was (Supreme Dalek), but that the coloring was wrong. They have gold accents, not white!

I am such a dork. XD

Doctor Who musical: Good idea or bad idea?

I think if done right, it could be fun. I'd love to see it done a la Buffy the Vampire Slayer (and I think Xena did it too?), where it exists as an episode in the series so that the actors could participate in it, instead of having it as a full stage musical that requires a different cast. And some of the actors are singers already. Iirc, both John Borrowman and Billie Piper (if she could be persuaded back for one more ep, perhaps in a flashback capacity) are singers.

And I would love to see the Doctor go all Rex Harrison and speak-sing his usual strings of technobabble. In my mind, at least, it would be very awesome.

I saw the new Doctor Who Children in Need special. Bit of a cop out, considering in the past they've done full mini-episodes, but still fun to watch. Mmmm, can't wait for the Christmas special. <3 <3 <3

This is just ever so slightly obsessive of me.

We were discussing phloem in plant form and function lab today, and it came up that phloem possess, among other parts, companion cells.

This prompted smirking and inwardly giggling on my part. So are there Doctor cells too? What about Tardis cells?

I now officially am certified to get liquid nitrogen from the Microscopy Center's stores. This is both cool (ha) and a little scary. After all, it is insanely cold liquid that could give you frostbite if it splashes on you. Or it could freeze you solid if you happen to be standing behind a ton of canisters when they rupture, if you believe Golden Eye. That still wigs me out a little. XD

I would love to be able to use it to make nano ice cream, either way. Nano ice cream is ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. It quick-freezes the ice cream, so the resulting ice crystals that form are extremely small. I bet it's uber-creamy. <3

I tried collard coleslaw today--basically coleslaw with collard strips in it. It would have been deliciously tasty if it wasn't practically SWIMMING in mayonnaise. Ah well. I wonder if I could try making some on my own. Hmmm...

I have been waiting for this all damn week. It's gonna air less than an hour from now! So excited! I think in some sort of celebratory fashion, my brain has been off-and-on playing Doctorin' the TARDIS in my head. It has got me STOKED.

Also, a literal sign of the times: I noticed a sign at school touting an upcoming blood drive. The incentive they used to get people to come and donate: Free gas.

I would like to take a moment to SQUEE over the package I got in the mail from a certain Sushi yesterday. It couldn't have come at a better time, either, as I was heading out to the herbarium when I discovered it, and was kinda in a funk, and discovering it on the doorstep made the day suddenly SO MUCH BETTER. It included an adorable star jar which will be going on my desk at school, a Burt's Bees kit complete with bee-friendly flower seed pack(which is just the excuse I need to start a patch of herb/flower randomness in the backyard!), and BPAL imps, which I can play with now! <3 Sushi is so awesome, and it made my day. <3
