Once upon a time, I was an avid reader of "Ranger Rick", a nature magazine for kids (I guess that's only more evidece that the biology thing started early for me). It was through an article in it that I learned the plight of the bluebirds, and subsequently, stoked with visions of single-handedly saving the bluebird population, ordered plans for a nesting box and got my dad to help me build one. We did actually manage to get bluebirds, but the box itself only lasted a season, I think due to the wood going bad and rotting. After several years, however, we have once again installed a bluebird box in the backyard.

We actually have prime bluebird property--our backyard is basically one huge field, most likely chock full of worms and other creatures considered to be good eatin'. So I'm hoping we'll get a nice young couple looking to start a family. Ideally, I'd love bluebirds again, although any songbird will do. The hole has a diameter that's big enough for bluebirds and other songbirds, but will keep starlings etc. out, so they can't steal the spot for nesting. Hopefully, though, whoever moves in can handle noisy neighbors (i.e. a dachshund with a mouth the size of Missouri).

*jealous* We had a lot of development right behind our house that scared most of the bird population away for YEARS. They're finally starting to come back, but I want moooore. I love the birds.

Yeah, bluebirds seem to be rather hard to come by around here too. Last year was the first time in a very long time I actually saw any, and that was only thanks to the fact that someone up the street had put up a nesting box as well. But, that means there has to be at least one breeding pair roaming around. I'm wondering if they're hanging in the woods in the back, away from us noisy humans. Apparently some years ago, when we had a nasty snowstorm, my mom saw bluebirds visiting the suet cake we had out. Here's hoping they'll like our box. <3 <3

I read "Ranger Rick" also! <3 And I remember bluebird boxes. I think my grandparents had one.
