Avocadocumentary--Week 24 (and 23)

So, yeah, once again I'm a week behind. I blame it on mourning my tomato seedlings. Or possibly being lazy. Or both.

Maybe it's just me, but Avobaby looks like it's getting bigger, despite the fact that it hasn't gotten any significantly new leaves. Maybe Avobaby is doing body building when I'm not watching? Or perhaps it's taking steroids. Or possibly hormones. Oh, Avobaby, you were taking gibberellins, weren't you? I'm trying to raise you as a right, upstanding citizen, and look what you do! What's next? Auxin? Ethylene?! Oh WOE.

I have, however, started trying to beef Avobaby up through more natural means. Namely, taking [livejournal.com profile] grant_p's advice and regularly blowing gently on Avobaby to try and get it to develop its stem more. Of course, the problem is that I have a terrible time remembering to do so. Maybe if I can get into the habit of it, maybe I can stimulate Avobaby into growing big and strong. *Without* injections.

It also looks like Avobaby's starting another leaf set. All the more reason to try and remember to give Avobaby its daily blowing.

On a slightly different note, it seems like Avobaby might be abandoning its old seed. It seems like it's turned darker since the last time I noticed it. Perhaps it's a sign its rotting away? If it is, then it's yet another indication that Avobaby's growing up so fast.

And on the subject of growing, Hal's still putting out roots. I'm trying to remember at what point I took Avobaby out of the water and put it into soil. I know it had *some* rooting, but I'm pretty sure it hadn't divided yet. So I wonder if maybe Hal's at about the right age to go into a pot. I guess he should go into one soon, in any case, before his root gets too long to fit into the pot without breaking it.

Also, pumpkins! Having remembered the pumpkin seeds I saved from Halloween last year, I decided to give growing them a whirl. I have no idea if they'll grow or not, but I have high hopes that they will, since they've only been in a dark closet for a few months. I think about the only reason they might not grow is if they weren't mature. But either way, we'll see. If they don't work, I know I have plenty of leftover seeds to keep working with. I saved a ton more than I probably needed.

With any luck, though, I'll soon have punkids! <3

Avobaby looks bigger to me because the leaves seem to be holding themselves more aloft. Know what I mean? The top set hardly dangle at all - they stick right out, and the bottom sets seem perkier too. It gives him a fuller look.

Then again, I might be on the crack.

Actually, hm, I see what you mean. I do think Avobaby has been more perky lately than it has in the past, and maybe that's contributing to its apparent ambitions of trying to be Gigantor. I'm not quite sure why it's been so perky, as I haven't really been doing anything different (except I changed the water I use to water it, but it was like that beforehand, so that can't be it). Maybe it has something to do with the change of the seasons and the subsequent change in light.

Also, did you see Planet Earth last night? I thought the caves episode was spifftacular, possibly because I find caves to be both fascinating and terrifying. Although, I'm such a kid--I thought Mt. Guano was hilarious. ^_^;; And I'm still in love with the timelapse photography they used in the deciduous forests ep for the plants. Baobab flowers. <3 <3

i love avobaby's new leaves. i've actually just started to soak my own seed. i peeled it this time....and i plan on leaving it in the water longer than i usually do. :)
also, GO HAL!
also, pumpkins...well, i know last year i *accidently* grew some squash (out of the compost) but they bearly got longer than 2.5 inches before they'd start to rot. i'm not sure why. i even lifted them off the ground after a while. i think they were actually ornamental gourds from the prior halloween, but i don't really know. anyways, definately check out the best way to care for those guys. also, take lots of pictures. the flowers are gorgeous!!
