HOLY CRAP BLUEBIRDS.
Casually gazing out the window not fifteen minutes ago, my Dad noticed something blue perched outside the birdhouse we put up a couple months ago. Five minutes of debating and a pair of binoculars later, we confirmed that it was a BLUEBIRD OMG. Cue Mom and I lapsing into fits of happiness. All three of us turned into horrible voyeurs as we watched it inspecting the property. It kept sticking its head in, then poking it out again, over and over. I can just imagine Mrs. Bluebird (who I believe was sitting in the tree above it) going "Honey, is there a lot of space?" "Yes, dear, there's plenty of space." "What about the floors, are the floors in good contiditon?" "Yes, dear, there are good floors." "Have the walls been painted?" "*sigh* No, dear, the walls are fine." And so on. XD
We're a little concerned, though, because we know some chickadees took up residence earlier in the spring. We haven't seen them in a while, so we're not certain if the chickadee chicks grew up, or if they abandoned the nest, or what, but we haven't cleaned it out, so we're worried that the bluebirds might seek housing elsewhere. So, we figure the easiest thing to do, just in case the chickadees are still there, is go to the nursery and get another bluebird house. So we're going to a plant store. Oh DARN. XD
Either way, the bluebirds are still around. Joy and bliss! <3 <3 <3
Also, first we had Star Trek vs. Internet Cats, now we have Star Trek vs. The Python Boys! I'm so easily amused. XD

Living out here in the desert as I do, I had no idea that seeing bluebirds was such an awesome thing. Are they rare in your area, or is it just cool because they're so pretty? XD

Both, actually. ^_^ The males are absolutely GOOORGEOUS. They're an incredible vibrant blue--in the right light, they're so blue they're purple. And they are somewhat on the rare side, though I've been seeing more of them recently, partially because the area I'm in is getting older (and subsequently having less construction/noisy kid activity that scares wildlife away), partially because I've been around areas they like to hang around a lot, like the field lab. They've been having problems with habitat loss and invasive birds like starlings and such stealing all the prime nesting spots, so their numbers have been kinda dwindling. Though apparently they've been recovering, which I suspect is partly because of the development of bluebird boxes, which apparently are designed to be something bluebirds like, and have an entry hole that's big enough for bluebirds, but small enough that the larger alien birds can't get in. Either way, yay for bluebirds coming back! <3 <3 <3
And I've totally waxed babbly now, so I'll stop. XD

And ecosystem babble is totally the best sort of babble. Even though I'm more into the physics side of science, I'm an overall science nerd at heart, and I like reading about things like wildlife populations.

Also, I would like to reiterate that I adore that icon. It still makes me smile every time I see it.

I killed three today, which massively depresses me because I almost never kill anything that's not rabid unless I plan to eat it. But as a partial fix, my sister's going to bake them into a treat for our dogs. They're related to blackbirds, so now I just need 21 more for a pie.

Blackbird pie, however, works well as a compromise. ^_^

On the outskirts of Greensboro is a huge gardening place. You can see it from the train and it's huge.
I'm never taking you there.
