Final drabble is done! *is proud of self* Now to backtrack and work on the Valentine's ficlets I owe people. <3
For Relia. <3 Ed disapproves of Lolly and her dating ways!
Edmund's face was bright red, and it was hard to tell whether his embarrassment or his anger was contributing more color. He paced about the choir room, his arms waving about frantically as he spoke, his gaze darting everywhere except on his sister. "I can't believe you did this! Have you lost your mind?"
"I should ask you the same thing, Ed!" Lorelei shouted, which had the unfortunate tendency to carry. Luckily, it was after hours at the school. The only one that might overhear was the janitor, and he knew better than to be near a room where the angel of song was shouting. Lorelei finished fastening the last few buttons on her jacket. It was only when she stood, heralding that she had finished dressing, that Edmund dared to look at her again. "What gives you the right to come barging in here like Gandalf and scaring off the boy I happen to fancy?"
"Fancy? Fancy?!" Edmund's ears were quickly turning the color of beets. "Lorelei, he had his hands all over you."
His younger sister let out a frustrated groan, massaging her temples. "It's called making out. With few exceptions, all the kids do it. And it's not like Christian was stripping me, or anything. I was getting warm. I undid my jacket."
"Is that all, then?" Edmund said with increasing agitation, the fact that she would bewildering him and causing his attempt at sarcasm to only sound more panicked, "And then what next, Lorelei, what next?" He shuddered at the possibility.
"Oh, then I was thinking we'd have sex in the middle of the choir room," she said, prompting a strangled noise from Edmund, "what do you think would happen? I wasn't going to let him take advantage of me or anything. I'm a big girl, Ed, I can take care of myself."
Edmund's arms flew in wide arcs again. "You're fifteen, barely a teenager! Do you think I'm going to just stand by and watch you throw your life away like this?" She couldn't. She just couldn't. How could she disregard herself in such a way?
"Ed--what the--how is snogging throwing my life away? It's not like I lost my virginity over this." Edmund paled, his eyes glazing over as he gazed at her. "Oh, stop that! Yes, I'm still untouched by the passionate hand of man, much to my chagrin. When are you going to realize that we're not all going to be nuns when we grow up? What are you going to do when Sveta starts watching the boys? Or Annie?"
"I--" Edmund's eyes snapped back into focus, "I'm their brother. I'll protect them too--"
Lorelei folded her arms across her chest, leveling a hard gaze at Edmund. "From what? Holding hands? Hugging? Not all of us are afraid of getting close to other people like you are."
"It's not getting close that bothers me! It's what happens when you get too close." Edmund approached his sister, resting his hands firmly on her shoulders. He took a deep breath to try and calm himself before leveling his gaze at her, earnesty in his eyes. "Lolly. I don't want you to get hurt, not by him or anyone else. I know him, Lorelei--"
"That doesn't necessarily mean anything--"
"He had dishonourable intentions!"
"So what if he did?" Lorelei shouted, her exasperation overflowing as she broke away from her brother, "Fuck, Ed, it won't ever matter who I date, because it'll all be the same to you. I could go out and have an affair with a gangster addicted to smack, and it wouldn't matter. You'd come crashing in to bail me out anyway. I could date the most perfect guy in the history of guydom, someone who would treasure me, and you would never know it, because you would automatically assume he was out to pluck me, and chase him away. It. Won't. Matter. Maybe you don't mind taking cold showers the rest of your life, but one of these days I'd like to experience at least the beginnings of love--not even sex, just love--just being able to hold someone's damned hand without you breaking into a cold sweat--and I won't be able to do it with you hanging over me! We're all going to grow up eventually, Ed, whether you like it or not. We're going to make our mistakes. When are you going to realize that it's not your place to be our knight?"
Edmund stared at her, still shaking with emotion. When he spoke, it was quiet, defiant, sprinkled with love in spite of itself. In Edmund's world, all was not right unless his sisters stayed protected from whatever harm the world had up its sleeve. "You're still too young, Lolly."
Lorelei threw her hands up in the air, letting out a frustrated shriek. "I give up! I may as well buy the habit now, or start my defense for when I stand in front of the court to explain why you died of cardiac arrest. See you at home, Edmund. Or not."
Lorelei swept past him, her head held high and challenging. It wasn't until the door had closed behind her that Edmund let his shoulders slump. Sometimes, he wished he didn't have any sisters. But then where would he be?
