I think you may be watching too much anime with too little sleep..that or the fumes from Potatobob have finally hit toxin-level. Oh! I frogot to post below, in my own potato-experiments, the original tuber DID wind up rotting, hence the smell, but it didn't seem to hurt the plant at all. maybe something similar is happening with yours?
