Note to self: The one week when you never get around to posting updates is going to inevitably combine forces with the next week to create a huge growth monster that results in you having lots of pictures to show.

But, the advantage of having two weeks instead of one: Comparison time!

Last week on the left, this week on the right. Aside from the fact that this week I took pictures after watering Avobaby (and therefore it appears more perky), I think this shows how quickly Avobaby can grow leaves when it puts its mind to it. I suspect another week or so, and it'll have fully developed leaves up top there.

Something I noticed this week: I must be a bad parent, because Avobaby's gone out and gotten TATTOOS. Right under my nose, no less! Avobaby, you are GROUNDED. When you're fully grown, I don't care what you do, but as long as you're a sapling, you'll live by my rules!

See? SEE?! Well, actually, it's kinda hard to see in this picture, but if you look closely, you can see what appears to be maroon speckles along the stem. Really, where did I go wrong? First trying to be a palm tree, now this? Next thing I know you'll be sleeping around with the weeds outside and getting God-knows-what on your pretty little leaves! *sob* Now cut this out and fly straight!

On a different note, HAL UPDATE!

*cue theme from 2001*

IT OPENS. MY GOD. IT'S FULL OF STARS.

I'm excited! After weeks of doing nothing, Hal is beginning to show some signs of life! I'm starting to get a feel for the beginning of the avocado life cycle now--for the longest time it's been tightly closed, then recently, it's split down the middle as seen. I'm guessing I'll see some rooting soon, and soon after that, a shoot! *squee!*

Also, my seed babies have been growing well.

The tomatoes have sprouted, which I'm happy about. They appear to be progressing nicely. According to the package, they should be transplanted outside when they have 2-3 leaf sets. Although, being the plant geek that I am, I'm trying to decide if they're including the cotyledons or not. I suspect they are, but just to be safe, I'm going to wait until they have three actual leaf sets before I put them outside.

We also appear to have a mutant tomato. Instead of the usual two cotyledons, that one on the bottom appears to have sprouted with three. This intrigues me, seeing as everything has only one or two cotyledons. Perhaps it's a killer tomato! Oh noes!

I've also been totally floored by the fact that one of the bonsai has sprouted. I wasn't expecting to see any life from it for, well, weeks. On the other hand, since the seed packet contained multiple species, perhaps that one is just an early bloomer. Either way, I'm happy about it. I can get started bonasai-ing early!

The sunflowers, though, are becoming problem children. I don't know where the hell they got them from, but for the past several days now, they've been plagued by little brown mites. *skeeve skeeve* The only explanataion I have is that either they're crawling through cracks in the window, or they smuggled themselves in through either the seed packet, the peat moss, or the pot itself. Whatever they are, though, they seem to be sunflower-focused, as they haven't touched the tomatoes, which I have to admit, I'm grateful for.

Either way, I'm not pleased with that new development. Initially I hit them with some insecticidal soap, but then started feeling guilty, since I know certain insecticides can hurt seedlings. So, since the seedlings are still small, I've been washing the leaves regularly to get rid of the mites. They seem to keep coming, though. I hope they're not crawling back up through the pipes. I'm not sure if it's because of the mites or not, but the sunflowers have stopped growing directly upwards and have taken a more rambly approach, which is distinctly un-sunflower-like. I'm hoping it's just because they're still inside and are for want of sun, so they're getting desperate. Maybe they'll get better when I transplant them outside.

Get better, babies. ;_;

yeah, i think sunflowers need to be put outside. they're in need of more room to grow up and tall.
i'm so pleased with all of your plants. I, on the other hand, kill everything. ;_; the only think that has really survived, other than outside stuff, is a tropical in the bathroom window. i bearly water it and it thrives. i think it likes the steamy shower air. ^_^
also, YAY avobaby!! so big and tall and strong. those top leaves look a lot more slender than the bottom leaves. is that just b/c they haven't filled out yet??
