Well, I haven't been too talkative lately, what with holidays and relatives visiting and all that good stuff. But the avokids are doing well! They have, in fact, given me presents in the forms of lovely growth!

I guess we'll go down the list, starting with our resident elder, Avobaby.

We have Avobaby from a different position and angle this time around, thanks to the fact that I had to move the hordes to make room for holiday guests, which included pushing Avobaby and Hal off to the side. It looks to me like Avobaby is striking a dramatic pose in this picture. It's getting into the spirit of things! Or somebody watered it with Crown Royal.

I dunno how visible it is in this picture, but I noticed this week while watering it that it seemed to me like the stem has gotten thicker. I like to think that it's a sign that Avobaby is continuing to grow and mature. I'm not quite sure at what age Avobaby would start to have rings (and I don't plan to find out any time soon). I'm guessing when it starts to actually create wood. If it ever will. I wonder if it should have put some out if it was going to, being over a year old now.

Leaves continue to develop nicely, though! That one leaf looks like it's going all gung-ho. It's like...the Leroy Jenkins of leaves, shooting out before the others had planned completely.

LEAFROOOOOOOY JENKINS!

And now, we turn to Hal.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that Hal is finally putting out new growth, after all this time. I think the new leaves are a bit more evident now, although the flash still washes everything out. I tried taking one without the flash, but it just didn't come out. But! I got a bigger bonus, in that it appears now that the second bud down is also starting to put out new growth! Happy, joy, and bliss! I can't wait to see the new branches come out.

And now, our resident world conquerer in training.

This was Gigi (with whore) a couple of days ago. You will note not only has she put out a crapload of roots, but has also put out a shoot. A FRIGGIN SHOOT, AT HER AGE. OMG. At this rate she'll be commanding armies by this time next year. Needless to say, undoubtedly by evil brain waves, I decided if I didn't get Gigi into soil, she would reach tentacley roots out of the water and strangle me.

And there was no starting in a tiny pot for her either. We went straight to a Hal-sized pot. She's also been moved into the room with the other plants now, where I suspect she'll begin her reign.

I'm starting to question whether I should nip her reign of terror in the bud (so to speak) and cut her like I did Hal, though hopefully at the proper time instead of too late. I'd like you folkses input on that. I dunno which would be the better course--cutting, or leaving?

In the meantime, I'll watch her closely, and if I start to see plants flying a tiny avocado banner in their pots (or if others start to mysteriously disappear), I'll know who the culprit is.

ahh, the avokids. glad to see they're doing well. :) i can't believe that avobaby is over a year!! he's so tall. i think we need a mother & son picture to see just how tall he's become. hal looks amazing!!! i can't wait to see what kind of adult he will make. as for gigi, sheesh, girl! can't wait to grow up, huh? you better keep at eye on that one! :D
babycado is doing well and just put out another set of leaves with a rather long internode! only 3 leaves right now instead but also promptly put out another bud that's waiting to open. he usually puts out 5 leaves and then the new bud forms 1-2 months later. the internode is at least 2 inches longer than usual, too. i'm thinking that avobaby needs a bigger pot. almost all of the leaves have browned on the very tips (tho this hasn't extended up past a few millimeters on each leaf) and most leaves have not expanded to flat but remain rather curved. i will need to upload pictures so you can see.
as for my other babies - after soaking for months, i decided to do what some sites recommend and just pot them rootless. it appears that all 3 rooted as none have shriveled and it's been a few months. actually...
#1 - this seed came out of the avocado already split with roots. my sister thought she could just pull it out and 1/2 of the pit came off. i managed to get it to start growing but it started to wane in the water. i then potted it and it started to green again, only to have it end up with black mites. gross. poor thing. (this is the only one that has had mites of any kind.) i attempted to burn the mites (as i really didn't know what else to try and i like fire) but i think i accidently exposed the tiny tiny shoot to the fire. it started to die, but i still saw some green. after about 2 months of waiting, i noticed a very tiny shoot last week!! YAY!! he's growing. he's got a lot of fight in him and i can't wait to see what results. i'm wondering if he will go all shrubby.
#2 - this seed was potted without roots around the same time as #1 and #3. a month ago i noticed a bit of splitting. i waited and waaaiiiited and, last week, about the same time as #1, a shoot came up. she grew taller and faster than #1, i'm assuming b/c it did not undergo the amount of assult as her brother....or major sibling rivalry. her shoot, like her brother's, was very pink - more pink than i recall babycado's shoot. this little girl was promised months ago to my sister's friend and she just moved out yesterday at the height of just over 1". i hope my sister's friend takes good care of her.
#3 - currently no splitting but no shriveling, either. this little guy was purchased at the same time as #2 and has undergone the same treatment as his sister, but has refused to grow up. typical youngest child, i think. his lack of drying out tells me that he's rooted, though. now i'm just waiting on him.
#4 - this one came from a later purchase and i think is no longer with us. he was soaked, still soaking, but has become smaller and brown. i think i will need to lay him to rest soon. :( this saddens me.

ps.

try either taking a macro shot of hal's but or taking a really high resolution image so you are able to have a larger picture of just the bud to display. also, maybe try to off-center the picture so that the flash isn't directly facing the bud. OR, if you want to take a picture without the flash, try setting up a light off-camera that focuses directly on hal. :)
