Series: ANCD, Beacon City setting
Characters: Acheliah, Miniel
Warnings: Beware of sleepy cuddling!
Summary: A short brain-spasm drabble featuring the end of a busy day.
The movie had never gone into the DVD player. This thought was one of the first to come to Edmund's mind as he slowly crawled his way out of unconsciousness. The second was that he was not the only person that had fallen asleep on the couch.
Glastonbury was preparing for its annual spring carnival that day. That meant a ton of rushing about as he and Aliah and the other teachers and their student volunteers worked to get booths set up, streamers streamed, signs painted, and prizes acquired and assembled. Edmund found his feet and arms aching by the end of it all, several hours of lifting, moving, directing, and a small bit of time spent trying to assemble a temporary light fixture. But they had gotten it done, and the nursery school was now even more bright and colorful and prepared to take on students seeking a bit of afternoon fun.
Tired and just a little bit haggard, he and Aliah had made their way back to his flat afterwards. "What about a movie?" he had suggested, taking off his jacket and draping it carefully around its usual chair before they collapsed on the couch. "I could make us some popcorn and we could put our feet up."
"Mmm, that sounds nice," Liah had responded, a touch of fatigue entering her voice. She leaned against him, smiling softly. "Maybe in a bit."
He glanced at the clock that hung on the wall. That had been almost an hour ago. They really were going to watch a movie. They had even decided on a title. But he had ended up with his head against the armrest, and Liah curled up warm and soft against him, her head resting over his heart. She breathed softly, her eyelids fluttering in a dream. And she was, as she always was to him, perfect.
There had been a time he wouldn't have ever conceived of ending up like this. He couldn't. He would have been apprehensive at the mere thought of her leaning against him. He would have suggested she go home and get some sleep instead. He reached up and ever so gently stroked her auburn hair. But not now. Edmund had changed. He could be like this. He could be happy and relaxed and content, and he could be with her. He wrapped his arms around Aliah, holding her a little bit closer as he leaned back and let his eyes close again.
