Today was my first venture into dress shopping for the wedding.

Impressions: 1.) It seems like horizontal layers are a big thing right now, as I saw a TON of dresses that were doing that. None for me, thanks. 2.) There's also a TON of black. That may be because we're getting into fall, and there were some nice black dresses out there, but, well, black and wedding traditionally don't mix. XD 3.) I saw a lot of big-patterned dresses too. I'm guessing that's 'in' right now? I did see lots of paisley, though, which was fun. I like paisley. ^_^

Is it just me, or does it seem everything's going retro nowadays? It seems all the things that were big in the 60's and 70's are coming back, from peasant blouses to big patterns and the like. It's kinda interesting, actually. I'm noticing more and more the way things go in circles, right down to the clothes we wear.

But getting back on the subject of my search, I'm...well, I'm not quite sure where I am with things right now. I have acquired a backup dress.

It's not the best picture in the world, so I'll provide a bit of narration. It's a deep burgundy-purple color, a little longer than knee-length, empire waist with a little bit of lace-sequins, a rather nice pleated bottom, and a bolero jacket matching the empire waist. Mum's assessment of it was that it slimmed me down and made me look smaller through the chest (an area where I need all the help I can get), and that it fit me really well. It was actually pretty well priced, too, which was always good. So between all of this you would think that I had found The Dress, right?

Well, no. The problem is that it's a marriage of convenience. I think Mum was way more excited over it than I was. It's a really nice dress, and I can wear it if I find nothing else, and if I do find something else, I can return it. It has all the attributes I just mentioned, which I appreciate, but it just doesn't light my fire. I think part of it is that the professional outfits I have for presentations and the like are all the same style as this--sleeveless dress going about down to the knees, and a bolero jacket. It feels like all I'm getting is more of the same, which bugs me. Part of the reason I was excited about this was because I got to shop for something DIFFERENT. It makes me wonder, "Gee, is this style the only type that I can look halfway decent in?".

I also kinda wish I could take the jacket off in it. I might feel better about it if I could take the jacket off. It's cut so that without the jacket, my bra shows, which of course doesn't go over well. I want to take the jacket off, as there's something about bolero jackets--I dunno. For some reason they make me think 'older'. They're fine for my professional outfits, but for an event that's supposed to be fun and lively, it makes me feel very staid and matronly. Maybe I can find a bra that works with it. I just hope I don't have to go strapless. I have yet to find a strapless bra that provides sufficient support. Deadbeats. :p

While it does hide my bulges, I feel like it leaves me kinda shapeless. I guess you can kinda expect that when it's being hiding like that, but it'd also be nice to end up with something resembling a figure. I guess I'm being kinda vain about this, aren't I? When you come down to it, and it's certainly wearable, and I'm not objecting to wearing it if I can't find anything else. But on the other hand, I don't feel pretty in it. ._.; I look at it, and it just doesn't feel like it's me.

Well, I still have a month and a half. I'm hoping something else will jump out and grab me in that time period. But at least if I can't find anything else, I won't be going to the wedding wearing a barrel and suspenders.

It certainly is an acceptable dress for a fall wedding. I'd wait a little more until the season is in full swing and see if you can't find a different jacket to go over it. I am not a fan of bolero jackets either and as it gets closer to fall, they should have more full length jackets out. Alternately, you might be able to wear a belt or chain around your waist to emphasize your shape some. Otherwise, just keep looking!

It could be much worse, trust me. A bit over a hundred years ago, there was a really REALLY stupid idea, I think it was called a bustler. Resembled a travel trailer being towed behind the girl. Then there came the whalebone corsets, which for a while mixed with the trailers, then went on their own direction. My sister actually thought the surgery to remove the lower ribs to make the corset fit better was a good idea, but I always figured it's never good to remove the protection around your own lungs. The only girl I ever knew who REALLY fainted, not just acting that way, had overtightened to where she couldn't breathe.

Thankfully though, no mistake in female fashion will ever come close to the speedo. Men are still champions of the bad idea so long as those exist.

Ooh, I like the idea of trying to find a different jacket. Or maybe there's an awesome wrap out there that could work. I had thought that all the fall stuff would've been out by now, as they seem to bring it out a season early, but on the other hand I think I was still seeing a fair bit of summer clothing as well. I'll keep my eyes peeled! We're not done by a long shot. ^_^ Thanks for the suggestions!

Actually, the dress seems to have a little bit of ribbing in the top part, which reminds me a little of a corset. I think it's there more for support than for tightening to the point of asphyxiation, though. :p
