GAWD I feel so, like, girly! *hairtoss*
Feb. 6th, 2005 08:17 pmYeah. Someone might want to check downstairs with Hell, make sure their heaters are still working. Why? Well...
I went shoe shopping.
Okay, admittedly that in and of itself is not enough to make Hell freeze over. I've gone shoe shopping before. My sneakers have a tendency to be loved to death. However, when by the end of the day I've accquired FOUR pairs of shoes, that's probably enough for some freezage. But what I think probably sealed Hell's fate is that I bought high heeled shoes. My first pair of them.
Here's the story: The aforementioned sneakers-being-loved-to-death was the main reason I needed to go shoe shopping. While normally I refuse to give up my sneakers, the ones I had were starting to accquire non-ventilation holes that not only let water and other badness in, but the flaps of said holes were rubbing against my toes, which made my toes unhappy. So I decided it was time. There was a secondary reason for needing to go shoe shopping too. One of my pet peeves is wet socks. I hate it when my socks get wet, and unfortunately sneakers, with their aforementioned ventilation holes, have a tendency to let things like water and melted snow in and make me cranky. So I like to have a pair of inclement weather shoes on hand--a pair of shoes that are durable, and don't have those pesky holes. I've had a pair, a pair of what I think are sort of like ankle high men's hiking boots, for quite a while, but I've gotten fed up with them. Namely, while they do an excellent job of keeping water out, they also are cruel on my feet. It doesn't take much before my heels are raw and bleeding when I'm wearing them. Not fun. I thought at first that maybe it was just because they hadn't been broken in yet, but I've had them for a while, and they haven't gotten any more merciful. So they were getting no use, sitting abandoned in my closet, because I didn't want to wear them because while I don't like wet socks, I don't like bleeding heels even more. So I figured I needed to get a new pair, and since the old ones were in pretty good condition, I figured I could clean them up and donate them to someone who needs them more than I do and can handle their toughness.
So hence I ended up with a trip to the mall with my mom to go shoe hunting. We stopped first off at the sneaker place, and found a pair on sale that seemed comfortable, so we got those. Pair 1. Now to hunt for inclement weather shoes. My mother suggested a store up the mall a ways that sometimes carries boots(I suspect though that she wanted to go looking for herself--my mother the shoe hound). When we got there we discovered that the store was going out of business. Not only that, but because they were going out of business all pairs were only $16. Which I have to admit caused even me to go *SHOCK* because normally some of those shoes go for $80. As you might expect it was a madhouse of women in there fighting over shoes. My mother wandered off to go find something for herself, leaving me to peruse the stacks myself. I didn't find anything that could work as inclement weather shoes, but after sitting down to wait for her I got thinking. I said to myself "Self, you know, at some point you're probably going to need a pair of heels. If nothing else, for things like interviews. And right now's probably the best time to go looking, when you can get a good pair for $16 that normally goes for $60." and Self said "You know, you're right. Okay, let's go looking.". About fifteen minutes later I had found a pair of simple black shoes with a decent amount of heel on them. Not stilettos or anything, but it was enough that in order for me to walk right I had to walk with attitude. All I have to say is that DANG wearing heels feels weird. Like I'm standing on my toes. Which I guess is exactly what I was doing. So I got those and my mother found a pair for herself. Pair 2.
We then went across the way to the other shoe store, figuring it might be another good bet. Turns out we came at a good time, as since the store was trying to make way for all its spring stuff, it was selling off its winter pairs really cheaply(think $7). So I go looking and end up finding a pair of comfortable boots for the aforementioned $7 that seemed they would be good for fending off rain and snow. So I nabbed those. While I was there, I spotted a pair of ankle boots that looked like they would go well with my Quon costume(assuming I ever get it done. Hopefully I'll finish it before the con this year). So I grabbed those too, also for $7. Thus, pairs 3 and 4.
I'm actually rather proud of myself. Maybe I'm accquiring my mother's inhuman skill to stretch a dollar several miles long. <3
Either way though. Still never thought I'd be getting four pairs of shoes in one day.

Date: 2005-02-07 02:17 pm (UTC)Well, do you know anyone at Duke you could ask about their heaters?? lol I am pretty sure "hell's" temperature is somewhere between yours and ours, which puts outside temp around 40 :-D ...
Wow... Amanda bought high heels... wow... :-D
I wanna go on a shopping trip with you, if only so I can believe you got shoes for 7 dollars... that seems inhuman... ;-)

On the subject of shoes for 7 dollars, well, they *were*. You have to understand, I came at just the right time when they were trying to get rid of all their winter stuff to make room for spring stuff. Which meant cheap winter shoes. Alternatively, you have to understand my mother's dollar-stretching abilities: She's been known to buy a $120 or so dress suit for $20. THAT is inuman. XD
