I kinda went a little picture crazy this week, thanks to all sorts of interesting developments, both with Avobaby and with some of the other tenants.
The weather for the past week has been crazy like you wouldn't believe--the temperature hit almost 80 on Sunday, then plummeted to the point where it was SNOWING on Thursday. Needless to say, I'm very grateful that I thought to move Avobaby away from the windowsill Wednesday night. Being a tender plant who prefers warm weather, I hate to think what sitting next to a freezing cold window all night would've done to it.

For a change of pace (and because Dad suggested it), this week's full Avobaby shot has a ruler with it, to provide a sense of scale as to how big Avobaby's gotten. The ruler has the advantage of being threedimensional!, so it can stand freely next to Avobaby instead of needing to be propped up against something. Avobaby's been getting big. <3 <3 <3 Also in the picture is my oh-so-stylish makeshift drainage catch. Go tinfoil!

Much to my pleasant surprise, Avobaby was hiding a fifth leaf in the middle of the new batch of leaves, which appear to be developing nicely. I'm going to be interested to see how these leaves compare, size-wise, to the previous ones. Right now, I'm suspecting they're going to be about the same size, but we'll see. They still have their baby-shine for the moment.

Also, I don't know how easy it is to see in this picture, but somebody has been getting into using makeup. Avobaby's stem seems to have accquired a waxy coating, as indicated by the fact that the part I rubbed is darker than the rest of it. I'm not quite sure what this means, but it makes me worry what Avobaby's been up to. You are NOT going to be painting yourself up like a flower shop tart and partying all over the city, young sapling!

In other news, Potatobob seems to have gotten rid of his aphids, and is growing nicely. He seems to be going for a sort of...exploding potato effect with the leaves. Or possibly a representation of Old Faithful. Either way, I've started doing a little pruning to try and keep Potatobob from running rampant. I have no idea how this is going to work, but hopefully it'll result in a little bonsai potato that isn't too unhealthy. ^_^;
Potatobob's odor problem doesn't seem to have progressed any, so here's hoping that it'll resolve itself. Maybe to be on the safe side, I won't water him this week and let things dry out. I remember reading somewhere that potato plants can draw water from their tuber, so I don't think it'll hurt him much to go without watering for a week.
Speaking of moisture, I've started a new project--namely, attempting to grow the pomegranate bonsai kit I got for Christmas. It looks really awesome, and I hope it'll do well.
Getting it started, however, seems to be turning out to be a bit of a trial.

According to the instructions, you're supposed to poke holes in the bottom of the little swish cup containing growing medium and the seeds, and soak it in some water for an hour or so, probably something like this. Either my holes weren't big enough or the seeds were planted with the Driest Material in Existence, as after two hours, it was still bone dry. I finally had to resort to dribbling water over it, and even after that, I don't think I managed to completely soak it. I've gone ahead and put in the requisite hole-poked bag with hole-poked lid and put it in the cupboard to let it sit, though, and I'm hoping it's gotten enough water to start germinating. I'll have to watch it. Hopefully I won't grow mold instead.
With any luck, though, I'll soon have wee pomegranate seedlings. We shall see. <3
