Jun. 14th, 2008 01:10 pmSo. OMG you people.
My advisor and I came to the realization that I need to be in the field, particularly in the south, like, now. I have to, otherwise I run the risk of missing the prime time for my grass, lest it move into its taxonomically useless fall phase.
So what does that mean for me? It means a mad scramble to try and get permits (great timing on my part too--everyone I need to talk to is either on vacation or in the field) while planning a massive trip along the Atlantic coast. Considering that I've never gone on a road trip by myself before, and I'm notoriously bad at following directions, you know I'm absolutely thrilled.
I'm going to do this in two legs. If all goes well, I can do the trip south at the end of this week, during which I'll hit Georgia and Florida. Then I'll come back, and a couple weeks later, hopefully with Eien-chan in tow to help navigate, I'll go to Maryland, stop in DC for a couple days to root through the Smithsonian's herbarium (which I am admittedly really looking forward to. You know it's going to be awesome), then go to New Jersey, and, assuming I can get the permits and it can be planned, go to southern Pennsylvania. Then next year, with the bulk of my collection done, I can pinpoint hit other areas, like Louisiana and Massachusetts.
But right now, my focus is almost entirely on the south trip. I hope I can get everything done by Thursday. If not, I'll have to push it back a week, and with Florida and Georgia's growing season ahead of us, the risk increases that I'll get there, but what I find will be useless.
Good God, I hope I can do this.

Date: 2008-06-15 10:13 pm (UTC)I'm hoping, if all goes well, I'll be doing my north trip the weekend of Jul. 11th. It would be SO AWESOME to pop by, but I'm not sure if I'll be going to the northern part of Jersey, as the sites I'm planning to visit are all in the south/central area, iirc. It really depends on whether or not the Nature Conservancy will give me permission to collect on their land in Pennsylvania, and whether or not the time can be worked out to get up there, as I am probably going to be INSANE BOTANICAL WOMAN and rocketing through with poor Eien-chan trying his best to make sure I don't drive into the Atlantic. XD
P.S. Ficlet for you in the previous post, if you haven't seen it! <3
