Pictures are a wonderful thing! I've been wanting to take a picture of my desk at school to show off to you people for a while. I think I have a rather distinctive desk, with the things I have on it. I bet I could be a contender for Most Unique Desk in the Department. ^_^

So take a look at the Ru-home-base-at-school! <3

Isn't it lovely? <3

Moving to the topmost part of my desk down to the bottom!

1.) That would be a lamp I scavenged when the lab next door was gutted to make way for the new prof coming in. There were a ton of old supplies taken out, and were put out for people to take as they saw fit. So I snatched it up, thinking I could use it for something useful, particularly with its claw-like attachment for gripping tables and the like. Haven't found that useful thing yet, but there it is. <3
2.) My Dichanthelium DNA samples. It's a box o' Ziploc bags each filled with leaves and some silica gel (a.k.a. the tiny package of granules you find in coat pockets) to dry them out and keep them dry. That package leaning against it is another sample sent to me from an herbarium in SC.
3.) One of the things I inherited when I took the desk. I think it's a nice picture. One of the flowers has 7 petals! For some reason this amuses me.
4.) Binders! And my huge-ass biology book I got when I started doing TA work in the biology department. I have a lot of binders for everything. I try to stay organized. Doesn't always work. I'm scatterbrained. XD
5.) More binders! Most of these are from semesters past. Gods I have a lot of binders.
6.) Journals from Systematic Botany, which I have a subscription to, and extraneous papers I get in the mail. Mostly funding applications. Still trying to get monies for my work. ;_;
7.) The beginning of what I call my corner of love. <3 Little things that make me smile. In front there is a cute little crochet fortune cookie given to me by [livejournal.com profile] she_who_is_soc and [livejournal.com profile] shortcakegreen for Christmas. It's leaning against the star jar [livejournal.com profile] ambientfiligree sent me. <3 <3 <3
8.) A stuffed octopus I got when I was in Charleston. We visited the aquarium while we were down there, and I had to have him. He's sitting atop a stack of books I also inherited with the desk. I call him Edmund. <3 <3 <3
9.) A bumper sticker that came with the package from the SC herbarium. The fact that an herbarium would have a bumper sticker alone is pretty damn awesome. It sounds like that herbarium is rather distinctive. They even have their own superhero: Plant Man. XDDDD
10.) This comic. I loved it so much I printed it out, and it only seemed to make sense that it go along with Edmund the Octopus. <3
11.) Random office supplies. Although that box there used to carry a Chinese moon cake. One of my classmates brought moon cakes one day for journal discussion, as it was apparently the autumn moon festival. I got to keep one of the tins. <3 It's a pretty tin.
12.) Coke Zero: My daily caffeine boost. Lurking behind it, waiting to strike, is a vorpal bunny stapler. Sadly, no one yet has recognized it as the infamous vorpal bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
13.) The water bottle I carry with me to teach so that I have something to wet my throat when I dry up from too much talking. I'm proud to say that it's been used a TON. I got it during the Olympics, so it has a Beijing logo on it and everything. Go Team Planet!
14.) Despite my best efforts, I still end up with piles of papers that make my desk look like a complete mess.
15.) More piles of papers. On top there is a resurrection fern I got from a good friend of mine for Christmas. Since the picture has been taken, it and the box it's in have been set up behind the star jar. I haven't gone about rehydrating it yet, because I'm afraid it wouldn't do well in the dimness that is my office. I'm still trying to come up with a good name for it. I'm thinking of calling it Captain Jack or Lazarus.

Also. I can officially say now that the Dalek army has doubled in size.

I got into insane knitter mode tonight and decided that I MUST finish Dalek Redshirt tonight. So I did. Isn't he lovely? <3 He's going to be living in my Dad's office, exterminating computer bugs and perplexing everyone that comes in. I call him Dalek Redshirt, as one of the first things I thought when Dad said he wanted a grey and red Dalek was that, "Gee, was there really ever a grey and red Dalek?" That's when I realized: Of course you would never see a gray and red Dalek on Doctor Who. They must be like the Dalek footsoldiers, the ones that were always sent in first, and so were all killed off before the plot got to them. Hence, Dalek Redshirt. <3

A side view. Dalek Redshirt's eyestalk is pretty...jaunty. That's because in an attempt to make it a little less droopy, it's been wired. The gauge I used was pretty large, so it isn't very flexible. It also seems to make it inclined to stick up way high.

From the back! Still having a little trouble with the stripes, but I think it's improved a bit. The base is also a little different. I used an updated version of the pattern, which called for a few rows of purls at the beginning of the base, and I think it makes a huge difference in how the Dalek sits, and how it looks from the bottom in general. It's a crisper form.

And the bottom. HE'S VERY RED. Something about how the bottom comes together on this pattern fascinates me.

Dalek Redshirt contemplates the Great Heating Coil. I suspect part of the reason why Dalek Redshirts die so frequently is because they have even less fear than normal Daleks. They will go CHARGING IN DAMN THE TORPEDOES. And do things like think they can exterminate the Great Heating Coil before it burns them to a crisp. Sorry, Dalek Redshirt, coffee backup will not help you.

Dalek Redshirt channeling Humpty Dumpty. Dalek Redshirt, considering your nature, don't you think that a huge precipice is a BAD place to be? It's just begging for someone to come along and push you off. No wonder you're all dead before the first act.

Next up, I'm going to move away from grey for a bit. Three more Daleks to go!

Teehee, I'm glad you like him!

Resurrection ferns are AWESOME. They're like little tumbleweeds. They look a bit like a little fern, but when there's no water to be had, they dry up and turn into a husk of leaves and look utterly dead. BUT. If you put it in water, it'll open up and turn green again! They're adorable, and very cool! <3
