Dec. 16th, 2005 01:39 pmWell, I just had an incredibly tasty lunch.
Mum and I somehow got onto the subject of the tomato soup in the pantry, and she suggested to me that it might be fun to make grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch today. Well, having never made grilled cheese before, I wasn't completely sure what I was doing, and was kinda tentative about how to proceed. But I think I did okay with it, aside from probably putting too much butter on the bread, and it not turning out completely neat and pretty. But I quickly forgot about these though, because I was too busy realizing that grilled cheese and tomato soup taste SO DAMN GOOD together. I mean, I like tomato soup fine and all, but I didn't realize it could be elevated to DELICIOUS status when some grilled cheese was eaten with it. Yummy yummy good in my tummy.
I think it might be fun to experiment with the concept of grilled cheese. I've heard of people changing the bread around, or using different cheeses, or adding other things into the grilled cheese, like veggies or the like. I think I could come up with some interesting ideas, like maybe adding tuna and tomato. Or would that essentially be making a tuna melt?

Date: 2005-12-16 08:47 pm (UTC)Being from the land of squeeky cheese, my favorite was fresh mozerlla (so fresh it squeeks when you eat/cut it, a local speciality) cut in slices and used instead of orange cheese.
Some of my favorite recipes and tips:
-I like to cook my sandwiches with a tiny bit of olive oil instead of butter. It tastes even better than with butter, and toasts the bread perfectly. Don't press the sandwich too flat, it's good when you still have some of the soft bread inside.
-Grilled Mozerlla Cheese with tomatoe slices and fresh pesto. :D
-Grilled Bologna (sp?) with mustard (added after cooking)
-Grilled Orange Cheese Slices with sliced carrots (SERIOUSLY. I was skeptical before trying it, but it is completely delicious)
And if you're up for something a bit more fancy, how about Brushetta? Tastes completely awesome. Chop up some onion with tomatoes, mix together in a bowl with some olive oil, add dry basilic and oregano. Spoon over pieces of sliced french bread or hamberger buns, cover that with grated cheese and put in the oven until the cheese starts to melt. You can also pre-cook the bread a bit if you'd like your bread to be more crunch. This was my first recipe I made as a kid that mom actaully started making on her own after she tasted it.
